Just inland from the resort of Rimini, the flatlands give way to hills and river valleys, some of which have become nature parks and can now be visited by bicycle. Hillsides covered with silvery olive groves or rows of vines, castles and medieval watchtowers provide the traditional landscape of Romagna.
Onferno Caves, a European protected area, house a huge colony of Chiropteras (bats).
There are age-old chestnut woods in Uffogliano and Montefiore Conca. The sulphur mines of Perticara, which closed in 1964, stretch for over 100 km underground and, in parts, are up to 60 metres deep. Great mystery surrounds the origins of the hypogeum complex in Santarcangelo, resulting in a great number of extremely enigmatic interpretations.
